2020.09.12 16:49 AnimeCiety Alternative "Absolute Best Market Timing" - Pre-Cog vs Humans (Market Timer and Early & Often)

u/jerschneid made a post earlier this week regarding absolute best/worst and consistent investment scenarios, which inspired me to do a little extra digging on what I personally consider the "absolute best case market timer", as well as a few other scenarios which may be more realistic to some of the average FIRE members here.
I will introduce three alternative fictional characters: Steady Sarah, Algorithm Amanda, and Precog Patty. All three characters will be investing in a fictional IRA / HSA which allows for unlimited transfers of a 3% annual interest money market and the S&P index without fees nor tax implications. All three characters also receive $200 a month throughout the lifetime of their careers to invest in their retirement fund.
Skip to the end if you're only interested in the the final numbers.

Sarah Steady auto-invests every month

This is the same Sarah from u/jerschneid's example, she's got a strong persistent attitude that helps her maintain the course of Dollar Cost Averaging throughout her career. On the day she opened her account in 1979, she set up a $200 per month auto investment in an S&P 500 index fund. Then she never looked at her account again. She opens her account back up in August of 2020 and realizes it's now worth $1,620,708.

Algorithmic Amanda only invests when the market is down 2% or more

Amanda went to college to study nursing but took a few finance courses along the way. Amanda noticed that while it was best to dump boat loads of money into the market right after a complete economic collapse, actual market crashes didn't happen nearly often enough to override the power of buy and hold. So she made an investment algorithm for herself - she would only hold cash earning 3% annually in her retirement account until a monthly S&P drop of 2% or more - once that happened she would empty her money market fund and buy as many shares as possible.
If the market continues to drop by 2%, she'll take her monthly $200 and buy immediately while holding on to her prior shares. Once the market stops dropping by 2% monthly, Amanda keeps her existing shares, but starts building up her money market fund again - waiting for the next 2% drop for a purchase entry point.
Amanda soon realized it was a bit of a pain to continuously check the stock market every month and manually buy shares with her cash at the appropriate time - but she remembered that most retail investors break their own rules and end up losing vast amounts of money through emotional trading, so she stuck by her rules for 40+ years.
In August of 2020, Amanda opens up her retirement account to find that she has a portfolio value of $1,550,968. She calls up her friend Sarah to tell her the good news, but is devastated to later find out that Sarah has actually outperformed her, and by doing almost no investment work throughout the past 40 years.

Precog Patty sees the future and acts accordingly

Patty had a tough childhood - after watching her parents being murdered in front of her, she was taken to a PreCrime facility, where she was kept under physic training for a number of years. After the infamous John Anderton leaks occurred, Patty was set free and given to a foster family where she befriended Amanda and Sarah.
High school was a rough place for a precog, and she was routinely bullied. Although Patty had swore never to use her physic abilities again, she developed a dream of amassing a fortune and setting up an anti-bullying foundation one day. Once she stated working full time right as Sarah and Amanda joined the workforce, Patty opened up a retirement account.
Although her powers had become a bit rusty over the years, Patty could see whether or not the next month's S&P value would be higher or lower than the current month's. As such, Patty would either sell all of her index fund and move to cash if she sensed next month would yield a negative return, or use up all her cash to be 100% indexed if the S&P would yield a positive return in the future month. In the cases where there were multiple negative / positive months, Patty would simply stay in all cash or all index.
At first, Patty's portfolio was comparable to Amanda and Sarah's. After about 10 years (1989) into their careers, Patty had roughly $130k saved while Amanda and Sarah had $58k and $61k, respectively. Fast forward another 10 years, Patty was able to avoid the small market drop in 1997 and amassed her first million while Amanda and Sarah are at a respectable $333k and $350k.
Patty's significantly larger portfolio saws a higher share of gains during the dot com bubble and her account grew to over $2.5m, and stayed there as she side-stepped the later bubble burst. Meanwhile, Amanda and Sarah's accounts both took beatings as they both fell back under $300k in 2002. By the time the next mortgage backed bubble started growing, Patty's account soared to over $7m while Amanda and Sarah's had finally clawed their way past the half million mark. However, it would be short-lived as by the beginning of 2009 Amanda and Sarah saw their accounts shrivel back down to under $300k. Patty had moved to cash in July of 2008 and stayed there for 7 months in a row as the S&P dropped and dropped. Her account was now worth $8 million dollars and she would breeze past the 8 figure mark before 2009 was over.
In the years following the global financial crisis, Amanda and Sarah finally saw their accounts float back over half a million and consistently stayed there at around 2012. By this time, Patty was well into the $20m mark and gaining stride into the longest bull market in history.
In early 2020, the global pandemic brought the bull market to a halt. By this time, Amanda and Sarah were already quite satisfied with their portfolios. Both had accumulated over $1.5m by the time Covid infected the markets and their subsequent drop to $1.2m felt far less impactful than the prior crashes. It was around this time that Patty entered the 9 figure club for the first time. At the time of this writing, Patty's account is now worth $137,497,030.

Epilogue

In a recent friendly visit, Sarah had asked Patty to read her alternative timeline, one in which Sarah were more aggressive in career development and received annual raises of 4%, which would in turn boost her savings rate by 4% annually.
Patty obliged, and told Sarah she would have hit the $1m mark in 2013 rather than 2016 and would have achieved a portfolio value of $2.3m today. Given the desire for a $1.5m FIRE number, Sarah would have retired in 2017 rather than early (or mid) 2020.

Recap

Takeaways

The biggest takeaway for us is that developing a specific algorithm will be manually intensive to keep up over 40 years and likely under-perform compared to buy and hold. Be like Sarah, not Amanda. The other takeaway is push for opportunities to increase savings rate. The easiest is to advance your career (or start a career in a high earning field to begin with).
A more macro takeaway is that while most people are precogs, information asymmetry plays a big part in not only investment opportunities but life opportunities. Take opportunities to network and gain social capital when possible.
The spreadsheet can be found here. Feel free to make a copy and play around with the assumptions. Note that there is no simple algorithm for Amanda to invest in a specific market drop condition to beat out Sarah's monthly DCA without perhaps getting into very crazy conditionals.

Khojalu events / Dana Mazalova and her Artsakh conflict coverage

Czech journalist Dana Mazalova passed away yesterday. She helped Armenia after the 1988 earthquake and covered the Artsakh conflict.
She is the journalist who met Azeri journalist Chingiz Mustafayev and watched his Aghdam footage, after which she took an interview with Azeri president Mutallibov who admitted that Armenians gave Azeri civilians in Khojalu a safe passage, and that the Azeri opposition later framed the event to oust him.
She noted that Chingiz's original video didn't depict mutilations of Azeri civilian bodies in Khojalu, as later presented by the Azeri authorities, which means the Azeri side must have mutilated the bodies for a psychological impact.

MFA Mnatsakanyan: Condolences. She left a legacy of truth and justice with her impartial coverage of the Artsakh conflict.
Artsakh HRO Beglaryan: She was there during the conflict and provided impartial coverage, including during Khojalu events, and Azerbaijan's human rights violations against its own citizens and subsequent falsifications.

update: ECHR about Ramil Safarov case

Earlier the European Court for Human Rights ruled that Azeri ax murderer Ramil Safarov acted on behalf of himself, and not the Republic of Azerbaijan, when he killed the sleeping Armenian soldier Gurgen Margaryan during a NATO training in Hungary. The Armenian side is now appealing that decision to hold Azerbaijan-the-country responsible.

The ECHR also found that Azerbaijan violated a Convention by immediately releasing Safarov from prison upon his extradition to Azerbaijan. The court found his release to be a result of Azerbaijan's institutional policy of hate towards ethnic Armenians.

A new trial over a 1994 murder involving Tushonka Manvel's nephew

Earlier we learned that disgraced general Manvel Grigoryan's nephew killed businessman Mher Poghosyan in 1994 and that Manvel allegedly threatened the witnesses to silence them, which led to the death being classified as accidental manslaughter.
Documents were later falsified to claim the businessman died during Artsakh battles. President Robik Kocharyan then gave a posthumous bravery medal to the murdered man.
New evidence has resurfaced post-revolution. The court has agreed for a retrial.

Let's remember who the defendants are and what they're charged with
President Robik Kocharyan: Overthrowing constitutional order (with the use of army), large-scale bribery.
Robik's aide Armen Gevorgyan: aiding Robik's large-scale bribery and aiding the overthrowing of const. order.
Militarymen Yuri Khachaturov and Seyran Ohanyan: overthrowing const. order.

The judge is discussing the absence of March 1st victims, who recently complained that the trials are phony and being delayed for no reason, which led them to decide not to appear in court sessions anymore.
228 people are registered as march 1st victims. Robik disputed the list but the judge decided to leave it as is.
Robik then asked the judge to remove the arrest on his assets.
The next session is on September 15th.

2020.09.03 18:08 mikasaur We have officially reached TWO MILLION subscribers!

/cars is officially at 2M subscribers!
It’s one hell of a milestone and from all the moderators, we really appreciate everyone who contributes to this great subreddit (yes, even the trolls and troublemakers who make our lives so interesting).
Together we’ve seen over a decade of history. Yes, /cars has been around since 2008! In that time we’ve helped each other find cars; given each other advice; shared stories and commiserated over complaints; we’ve asked stupid questions.
There was that great debate over whether images would be allowed in our community. The mods’ decision may have lost us some subscribers but we believe it helped to improve the quality of /cars for years.
As a tribute to our 2M milestone, here’s a little walk through the years.
2008: After 6 months of existence /cars has a whopping 60 subscribers and a total of 5 posts, one of which is a blog post about what cars will be like in 2020!
2009: We’ve gotten to 275 subscribers and we have posts like “How Roger Penske is Going to Fix Saturn” and “Audi shows off its e-tron concept”
2010 we’re now at 776 readers and RugerRedhawk is head moderator. There are lots of different kinds of posts by the comments sections are sparse. More than 10 comments and you have a pretty engaging post.
2011: Yours truly joins the mod team and we jump 10x to 7,000 subscribers! Imgur explodes in popularity and we start seeing lots of image posts and their associated vague titles — “Something’s not right here”, “One from today.”, “And another from today.”, “Saw this baby at the skatepark today”. I even had some pretty vague, shitty titles as well. Tsk tsk.
2012: Mikecom32 and verdegrrl joins the mod team and reddit allows us to add some of our own style to the sub. I remember learning a bit of HTML and CSS to make the beautiful (/s) page you see in 2012. We still allowed direct links to imgur but required that people “tag” them with [SPOTTED] in the titles. Oh and we have 46,000 subscribers.
2013: AutoModerator becomes a thing, which is good because now we’re at 89,000 subscribers and we need some help. We disallowed direct links to images, to the chagrin of many users.
2014: Sticky posts become a thing and we do themed stickies for our 129,000 subscribers. You were still allowed to ask the same question about driving manuals for the umpteenth time as hipnosister did on September 7.
2015: Not too much has changed, though we do have 169,000 subscribers. My ugly site design is 3 years old and going strong. Now we’re allowed TWO sticky posts and try to corral all of the spotted pictures into one thread.
2016: Hey that looks better! Reddit gets a bit of an upgrade as we surpass 212,000 subscriber and we are allowed to post the rules for all you rule-breakers on the sidebar. teckademics is added to the mod team. saabkyle buys a Viper apparently.
2017: We surpass 397,000 subscribers and start to feature users’ cars. bonerdude420 complains about ‘virtual dashboards’ and fashionquestion111 spills pee on their driver’s seat.
2018: Holy cow! We rocket to 821,000 subscribers and New Reddit becomes a thing. We add gimpwiz, TheRealMeatloaf, brandonsmash, KingGumboot, and ExplosiveMachine to the mod team! Very welcome additions as you can see from brandon’s stickied post about Tesla-related submissions.
2019: Holy holy cow! We reach 1.5 MILLION follows in the subsequent year. Someone with a better knowledge of reddit than me could explain why it exploded so much between 2018 and 2019. Our rules are basically in their current form, the WCSIB thread is still going strong, and we’re a year away from adding another 500,000 subscribers. We add some great mods including mpgomatic, fugner, smitty_Oom.
On a personal note, I want to thank all of my fellow moderators who have been so instrumental in making this community what it is. Seriously you have no idea how much work and effort and dedication is involved with moderating a sub of this size. Thank you so much to the whole team. That even includes our newer mods like Tactikewl, underscore-hyphen_, and italia06823834.
What will the next decade hold for /cars? I’m excited to find out!

NSS busts ex-Yerevan mayor Beglaryan / Money laundering / Property theft

NSS report says: in 2009, Yerevan mayor Beglaryan colluded with Center District officials to embezzle property.
They organized an illegal scheme to donate 4 properties worth $488k, located on "expensive" streets, to an accomplice, who then sold them to Beglaryan's family for pennies.
The properties, in reality, belonged to Beglaryan. He used others to launder and conceal the theft. A felony case is launched.
https://factor.am/277085.html

other criminal cases involving Beglaryan
On March/24/2020 we learned that HHK Gagik Beglaryan, a former Transport Minister and Yerevan mayor, was placed on the wanted list and an arrest warrant in-absentia was issued.
At the time, he was charged with embezzling $483k worth property at the expense of a kindergarten. The investigation began after new mayor Hayk Marutyan busted 27 instances of kindergarten embezzlement by the former regime.

In another instance, Beglaryan's brother - a public official in charge of Sports Teams Center - gave property to his wife under suspicious circumstances.
His house was also raided as part of a fraud investigation involving North-South highway construction.

Civil society groups discuss election reforms / Ineligible voters inflating electoral numbers

NGOs held a meeting:
The govt has SECT system that contains information about whether the person is located in Armenia. Since SECT was implemented in certain checkpoints with delays, it doesn't have accurate info about people who left/entered.
Another problem for SECT is caused when the person changes their last name abroad, for example after marriage.
If "Sasun" moves to Russia and writes his name as "Sergey", it'll case a problem.

One way to fix the problem with ineligible voters being on voter lists, as it's done in Georgia, is to require a valid ID to keep the person on the list.
These days, expired passports are not accepted for any transaction except for voting. This exception should be removed.

This will remove 188,000 people from voter lists.
Inflated numbers cause various problems. It makes it harder to gather enough % votes to add an issue to a ballot.

We also need to make sure people are registered to vote in districts where they actually live. This is especially important for provincial elections because local officials have a record of collecting residents from elsewhere to vote in another location.

Many people don't want to register their real address as their voting address because they want to hide the fact that they own the new address they live in (tax purposes?).
We must make it clear to the public that these electoral changes have no legal effect on their property ownership issues.

How and why Kocharyan & Serj sold Armenia's infrastructure to Russia

FIP writes: After independence, several strategic infrastructure objects were privatized, sold, and handed over to foreign management. The transparency and benefits of these deals were disputed.
Some of these deals are "Property in exchange for debt", "Electric Networks of Armenia", "HayGas".

Deal 1: Property in exchange for debt
President Robert Kocharyan, Defense Minister Serj Sargsyan, and Russia signed this controversial agreement in 2002. In exchange for the $95M debt that Armenia accumulated between 1994-1998, Armenia agreed to give Russia full ownership and control of:

Hrazdan thermal plant worth $32M. It became part of Inter-RAO-ES. The latter sold it to the Russian-Armenian Tashir group in 2017.
Yerevan's Automated Systems worth $3.37M.
Yerevan's Mathematical Machines Research Center worth $2.75M. Currently owned by a Russian Citronix firm.
Mars factory worth $56M. It was also sold to Citronix in 2008.
Material Research and Production Enterprise worth $350K. Later, Mars and that institute would merge and form a free trade zone built by Citronix.

What is Citronix? It's part of the Russian giant SISTEMA firm, one of whose board members was/is none other than Robert Kocharyan.
Besides those objects, Russia also received the surrounding lands and a tax waiver.

Deal 2: HayGas
HayGas was delivering gas after independence. A month before president Levon's departure, the second player HayRusGazard was created.
On April 30, 1998, the new president Kocharyan decided to give Armenia's gas network to HayRusGazard.

HayRusGazard's 45% was then given to Russian Gazprom, 10% to Russian Itera, while 45% remained under Armenian control.
As part of the sale, Armenia was supposed to receive $148M worth gas throughout 2.5 years. President Levon later criticized Kocharyan, saying that the fate of the money that was supposed to go into state coffers is still unknown.

Gazprom got another sweet deal. Hrazdan thermal's remaining energy bloc was sold to them for $248M. The latter was supposed to finish its construction.
From that $248M, Gazprom didn't have to pay the $188M portion, in exchange for not raising gas prices for Armenian consumers. (eh?)

By 2013, Gazprom had 80% of HayRusGazard shares, with Armenia owning 20%. Armenia then sold the rest to Gasprom and the latter owned 100%. This also guaranteed that Armenia must buy gas from Gasprom until 2043.
Gazprom also owns the gas pipeline coming from Iran. It purchased it between 2006-2015.

Deal 3: Electric Networks of Armenia.
Privatized in 1998-2000 through an international auction. Despite several popular bidders, the winner was an offshore firm "Midland Resources Holding" owned by a Russian businessman Alexander Shneider.
In 2002, the offshore firm and Kocharyan signed the agreement to sell the Network. It was worth $25M, but since it had accumulated debt, it was sold for $12M.

The ownership changed multiple times. The offshore firm sold it to Russian Inter-RAO-ES for $73M (3x original price) in 2006.
Inter-RAO is the company that decided to raise electricity prices in 2015, which triggered the iconic Electric Yerevan protests.

Later in 2015, Inter-RAO sold the Network to "Liormand Holding" and "Cascade Energy", both of which are offshore firms owned by Russian-Armenian businessman Samvel Karapetyan (Tashir Group).
The latter agreed to co-subsidize the electricity cost to prevent a rise for 1 year, due to protests.

To be continued...

Beirut explosion: Does Armenia have similar explosive ammonium?

After the Beirut explosion, the inspectors decided to audit two chemical facilities (Vanadzor and Nairit) to find if they store similar explosive materials.

Inspectors: // we couldn't find 90 tons of ammonium and ammonium liquid as reported by media outlets. The reserves were earlier sold. Only 1 out of 4 containers is 1/6th full with 9 tons of ammonium.
The storage contains very little materials to be dangerous. It's not enough to blow up in case of fire. This material quickly evaporates.

Since the factory was bankrupted earlier, the new owner will decide the fate of those 9 tons. It could be sold. (For comparison, 2,700 tons exploded in Beirut).
The factory also has very little mercury. It's properly sealed and safe.

However, we found fire safety code violations in the facility and asked the owner to fix it. The facility is in poor shape after being abandoned 4 years ago. More specifically, it doesn't have running water and "Stop" signs.
We'll audit Nairit factory and fireworks warehouses next. \\

ex-BHK member wants a refund

Ashot Sargsyan was managing BHK's office in Yerevan's Norq-Marash district between 2007-2010.
Ashot said: // I trusted BHK chief Tsarukyan's promise about appointing me as Goom Market's director if I helped BHK, and used my own $28K to cover office expenses.
I gave $20 aid to voters. On rare occasions, I'd pay $200 towards someone's education. (nowadays it's called "bribe")

It is because of our payments that BHK received the most votes in Norq-Marash. (go on...)

Handle all your paperwork in one building or online

A few weeks ago the govt launched the first universal facility that houses departments from dozens of government agencies, so the citizen won't have to run around to get something done. The one in Yerevan has served 1,500 people so far.

"It took me 6 minutes to submit an application," said an official. "Online queue registration, friendly staff, bank terminals, parking lot," she promised.
"I needed to get a document from the Property Registration Agency. They sent me an SMS when it was ready, along with a code. I logged into the website and got it. A physical visit wasn't necessary."

There will be 49 such facilities in Armenia. The construction and the online document system will complete by 2022.

More about archaeological dragon-stones / Ancient cult?

As we learned yesterday, Armenia has hundreds of ancient Vishapaqar stones with dragon paintings. Education Ministry began reinstalling some of them in previous locations where they were found, and decided to flip the stone located in Yerevan Circular Park because it was installed sideways.

Expert explains what Vishapaqar is: // These 3,000 B.C. stones are unique to Armenian Highland's mountainous areas and are at least 1,300m above the ocean level.
People used to climb mountains to hold various religious rituals lasting 1-2 weeks. Vishapaqars were used during rituals.

They also served a purpose to unite various tribes. You can find them near Van and Urmiah lakes, too.
They resemble khachqars. Each one had to be crafted by a whole group of architects because they are big and made of tough stones.

They were first studied 100 years ago with a renewed interest 10 years ago. You could say that vishapaqars are the ancestors of khachqars. \\

How is the asphalt quality checked?

Recently, after purchasing quality-verification equipment, the govt has been forcing some construction firms to re-do the asphalt that was of poor quality. The tests are done by the govt-funded "Road Department" agency (smart name).

Their lab uses lasers to check if the asphalt is smooth. It takes asphalt samples to study the composition and density, water levels, thickness. They can test sand, concrete, and several other materials.

2020.08.07 01:13 floy_floy Death Race Club: Related Behind-the-Scenes, interviews and Commentary. If you are into watching these, I made an exhaustive list based on “What’s Leaving” the channel August 31.

Sometimes I miss those little gems when I’m focusing on making my viewing goals for the month.
Not that you don’t already have enough to get to, but I made a (very long) handy list if you want to watch those involved talk about the process or Film Scholars discussing the works.
The Curators do an excellent job of including a sometimes comprehensive array of ‘extras’ that already existed or that they produce themselves specifically for the channel.
Let me know if I left any out, or if this is a ridiculous use of my time and no one uses it lol.
Death race extras:
[ ] Kathleen Collins interview (23m) discusses philosophical approaches to the medium in Losing Ground. (1982)
[ ] Kelly Reichardt ‘Masterclass’ (29m) Filmmaker discusses Wendy and Lucy, MEEKS Cuttoff and working with Michelle Williams.
[ ] Visconti:
[ ] German Expressionism
[ ] Mike Leigh
[ ] Noah Baumbach
[ ] Husbands - Cassavetes
[ ] Tarkovsky
[ ] Marriage Stories Teaser(2m)
Add 8/8
[ ] ‘Introducing Western Noir’ (13m) Programmer Imogen Sara Smith 2020
Adding this because a Film from that collection is Leaving this month.

2020.07.28 22:39 dhkm13 Quitting: Rounding it up to "retired"

Finally! I quit a job without having anything lined up. Friday is my last day.
I've spent the last few months burning vacation time and slacking off work, just enjoying my kid and fooling around with my outdoor hobbies, and it's been glorious -- so I'ma call myself retired now ;)
I think this is the turning point for me as far as actually using my fuck-you money to tell the world to fuck off. Happily, I'm not quite 40 yet. I'm sure I'll still do interesting things for money, start businesses, consult, whatever -- but I'm finally taking that little nagging "*should* work" out of the equation.
Background:
Middle class urban family, parents both worked their whole lives until retiring recently at 70+. They probably inherited a few hundred k in total from both sides of the family. I scored a full scholarship at a top university, so I came out with no debt and went straight to work in my hometown.
My career:
When I got my first big-corp gig around age 30 ($130k -> $190k), my expected age of "could stop working" went from about 55to about 40 -- I was targeting about $2M back then. Ran across ERE and MMM around that time, and was like: "oh, here are some people writing about what I'm doing in my spreadsheet and with all my cheap-livin' ways!" It was a nice feeling.
Things have gone waaaaaay better than expected -- bigger wages than I ever expected (my corner of industry blew up), big windfalls from employer stock appreciation, well-timed RE trades. Since about 2010 I've planned to retire on RE cashflow, and leave everything else alone as much as possible. Having a kid definitely added some extra pressure re: childcare costs.
I've been working a progression of non-fancy-but-really-fun to now fancy-and-somewhat-fun tech jobs for twenty years in HCOL areas, and just kind of ran out of steam in the current one. COVID makes corporate work awful if you like people -- I hate being on video chat all the time instead of just occasionally. I'll miss the people, but I felt tired of it and undervalued/badly positioned in the end at this job.
Income:
I made $55k/year out of college, and $130k at age 29 -- steady progression at a consulting firm. Going to BigTech started a steep climb in income. Peak work income for me was about $650k a little while back -- now badly underpaid at $380k (peers at $600k-$1M) for the past few years due to taking a job for interest/resume rather than money. Stupid money any way you cut it -- please accept my half-hearted, insincere apologies for being another boring corporate tech-money story ;/
But judging by my willingness to quit, I apparently can't be fucked to get out of bed for $400k/yr now. I tell recruiters upfront that I'm really expensive now, partly because I'm experienced and great at what I do, but mostly because I'm really happy not giving a fuck if I get hired. They seem to get a kick out of it, and I still get interviews when I tell them I'm looking for >$1M/yr.
Boy does it ever feel like a strong and powerful position to be able to say that and *mean* it -- and not care when it doesn't happen.
Portfolio and life situation:
I have a small kid, a spouse who's still working, and about 4.5M in net assets, 50% equities, 40% apartment real estate, 5% in home equity, and 5% ~cash (a $200k emergency fund is not that crazy when you have sudden apartment building expenses).
RE is yielding about $85k/yr in cash. My projections, based on a 5% gross return on equities (plus RE mortgage paydown), have our NW growing at ~$300k/yr after expenses. This conservative expectation of the markets has biased me towards real estate, probably a bit too much. But I also got out of school in the midst of the 2000 bust, and worked through the 2008 bust, so I know what it feels like to sit at the bottom of a market and see how much greener the grass was...
The plan is to almost never touch my equity portfolio, except for optional stuff to enjoy the gains here and there -- along with major life purchases like houses and college for kiddo and such.
Spouse would stop working for a while if we have another kid, or at least go very part-time. Going back to work at 5mo post partum was just too early. Where she comes from, you get a full year at full wages, daycare is ~free, school is free forever for everyone, etc. Crazy nice, crap weather.
Real Estate:
My biggest RE windfall was doubling value on a small multi-unit I bought as a hedge against losing a rent-controlled apartment. It doubled in value in 5 years (post 2008 recovery), with 80/20 LTV, and I made about $600k. Niiiice. Kinda got me hooked...
...but I've focused on larger more cashflow-oriented places since then. I have ~20 units, all in high-demand, rent-controlled areas with easygoing tenants. Stability is my main goal.
Expenses:
Our combined expenses are roughly $100k at the moment:
- $50k/yr house costs (split w/wife)
- $25k/yr child care (split w/wife)
- $25k/yr *everything* else (I've mostly paid because I earned way more, but we're transitioning to splitting most of it)
So my share is about $60k, which gives me about $25k of headroom before even thinking about selling equities or extracting RE principal. If we have another kid, childcare goes up to $50k/yr if my wife works, but... that's only until school starts. Then again, if we did private schools, that's a whole 'nother ballgame and would require more careful thought.
I'm refi-ing our $700k mortgage this month to get total PITI down to $3600/mo. We might move in the next year or so to a more moderate cost location, or I might take another fancy job for a couple of years to fund another kid and a nice home near my parents, who accidentally live in an ultra-HCOL area. That would necessitate an add'l $1M+ in downpayment to maintain my current housing costs in comparable comfort (i.e. 700k debt on a 4BR house with a nice yard near everything). Fuuuuuuu.... or I could just wait it out, accumulate it in NW and borrow against it. Crocodile tears, for sure.
Other Stuff:
Best decisions
- wifing a resilient, intelligent, tenacious woman who grew up poor on a farm and doesn't give a shit about money
- buying rental property while renting in a rent-controlled HCOL apartment
- pursuing engineering and design in school
- learning to manage people
- moving cities for a job, to try something new -- fell in love with a new place
Worst important decision: staying in a bad-fit relationship for 11 years before meeting my wife.
Worst unimportant decision: buying and selling small quantities ($10k-$20k each) of AMZN and TSLA in my 20's. HODL!
Risk and stress: If I'd never done *any* RE stuff, I'd probably have slightly more money today given how the markets have gone, but I *really* like getting rent checks when the market is in the shitter. That said, it has added stress to my life, and that's not great for me or those around me. In a decade I may decide that I'm so ridiculously rich that it's not worth thinking about even managing property managers anymore, and trade out of it.
Regardless, I plan to keep my RE holdings self-contained from here on out -- no more equity going in other than principal accumulation -- so my equity portfolio will likely eventually swamp it, even if i keep trading up every 5-7 years.
My original plan when I was younger was to be double covered -- retire on ~2% of NW in tax-neutral RE cashflow, and have an equal value equity portfolio, so I'd feel free to splurge now and then. As it turned out, that's still true of my current portfolio -- it's just way bigger than I expected, and I could probably live comfortably off it until I die even if I just held cash at this point. The limitations on my life now are all about time -- time with my kid, time with my hobbies, time with my wife and family. I can't wait until my kid is old enough to travel with me and get rad in all the ways she wants to.
I can't believe how good the world has been to me, and I appreciate the feeling that things will mostly get even easier, money-wise anyway, as I pass mid-life.
Anyway, it's been nice to draw occasional encouragement and perspective from folks on this forum over the years. Thanks for that :)

Strengths and Weaknesses

QB
My auto correct wants to change Trubisky to Rubbishy, hopefully that isnt a precurser to anything. Trubisky is on the last year of his contract and Foles has a team friendly deal that allows him to leave if Trubisky finnally steps up. In 2020, the Bears will have a cap hit of just over 15M for both of their potential starting QBs and Tyler Bray, good for 19th most in the nfl. For where we're at, and who we have, this is not a bad position to be in. We've got another year to evaluate our project QB, while having a proven option in Foles if the needed improvements don't materialize.
OL
This unit was a weakness last year. While we have retained four of the five starters, the team has brought in a new, highly praised line coach. The hope seems to rest on the coaching change, and improved QB play to help the Line produce. This group will probably be average, depending on the right side of the line. The team has the second highest percentage of cap space infested in the O-Line at just over 32M. It is also the second largest position group.
RB
This position group will hopefully become more of a strength, though how much depends on our QBs and O-Line. Montgomery, who is entering his sophomore year, finished second in yards and TDs among rookie RBs last season. He will again fight along side Tarik Cohen, who is in the final year of his contract. If our QB can play at a level that forces defenses to respect them, and the O-Line coaching change can have the desired impact, then this unit has a chance to make an impact. It should also help that the new O-Line Coach will allegedly be responsible for the run game. The cap hit for all Chicago RBs is just over 5M, 28th most in the NFL and second lowest cap positional cap hit for the team.
WR
Regardless of how Trubsiky played last year, every receiver not named Allen Robinson dropped too many passes. Every year since he was drafted, an article has been published saying that this is the year for Anthony Miller, we'll see. 'Swiss Army Knife' Cordarelle Patterson was not used enough last year, in any position, but when he was, he was good. To drive that statement home, here he is as a reciever, a running back, and a returner. Receivers need to not drop passes, and our depth needs to step up. With our newly added veteran depth, it is fair to expect more from this group. The WRs account for just over 28.5M of the teams 2020 cap, 10th highest in the NFL.
TE
The Bears have been trying to fix the TE position with gusto this offseason, leading to the controversial signing of Jimmy Graham, and the use of our first pick in this years draft (Rd 2, #43) to select Cole Kmet. At one point in the offseason, the team had ten TEs on the roster. Pace has yet to show he can choose a TE, but the hope is that the expensive Graham will be a nice stop-gap and mentor, until Kmet can make start contributing in the next couple of years. The eight TEs currently counting against the cap, represent just over 15M in the 2020 cap, which is the 5th most in the NFL.
DL
The starting defensive line is a force to be reckoned with, especially against the run. Hicks and Goldman have long been standouts, joined by both Nichols and Robertson-Harris, this line is part of the reason the bears have had a defense they can rely on to keep them in the game. Robertson-Harris is being given another chance to make improvements and show he is worth the time the team has put into him. He has shown flashes, as has the younger Nichols. The D-Line accounts for just over 32M, or 15% of the teams 2020 cap space.
LB
This unit has improved on paper, with the addition of Robert Quinn to take over for the lackluster Leonard Floyd. Combined with the D-Line this front 7 can be a top 5 unit, provided there are no injuries. The depth at this position, for the second year in a row, is almost negligible when considering who would be being replaced. Trevathan and Smith can be expected to drop into coverage often, as Mack and Quinn are typically run stuffers and pass rushers. The DBs should be able to work with the ILBs to handle the coverage. This 12 person unit costs just over 48M in cap space, 3rd most in the league.
CB
Fuller and Skrine both played well last year, but with the opening left by Amukamara's release, there is a big question mark to who will be filling the #2 spot. We've got four guys aiming for it, only one of who was on the team last year. More on this can be found below, in the Training Camp Headlines section. With only three players in this group set to make over 1M this year, the CBs take up about 25M in cap.
S
Tashaun Gipson was picked up for cheap this offseason. He could be a great pairing with stud All-Pro and 2x Pro Bowler Eddie Jackson. Gipson was released early after an injury but is expected to bounce back. This position, is a strength for the Bears. Safeties represent the third smallest cap hit for the team at 8M for six players.
Special Teams
Having seemingly found a Kicker that can be relied on, the bears special teams unit can be expected to improve with Pineiro having a full year of experience under his belt. Continuity at the other positions, including all but one coach, helps as well. Our ST unit, all of four players, probably soon to be three, take the smallest amount of cap in 2020, at just over 4M.

Its tough to have a lot of confidence in any big changes for the offense with limited training and no preseason. Though another year with the same playbook doesn't hurt and if Trubisky can start being who he was drafted to be, then I'd add win against the Colts and Texans. I see our floor as 7-9 and ceiling at 11-5 with a playoff berth. Wildcard or division winner depends on the Packers. That said, I don't see the Bears having a ton of success against playoff teams if Trubisky doesn't take the step he needs to.

The Bears have been doing well against the Lions for the last couple of years, going 4-for-4, which allows me to assume that that will continue. The Bears pulled out a win against the Giants this year, an improved Trubisky or the man, the myth, the legend, Nick Foles should be able to turn that into a streak.

The Falcons are our first team from the NFC South, and even with their upgrading at RB and TE, I don't see it being enough. Next we see the Rivers lead Colts, a team that could produce a remarkable amount compared to last year. Rivers is 2/4 against the Bears in his career and now that he has a team with the pieces to make it into the playoffs, this is a match up that the Bears might have had a shot at if it was later in the season.

The Bears have never beaten Tom Brady. In 5 games agsint the Brady lead Patriots, they have outscored us by 77 points. I find it hard to think that will change with everything that has gone on in Tampa this offseason. The Panthers though, are a team we can win against this season. They are going through too many changes and don't have the star power they used to.

Recently, the Bears vs Rams games have been defensive matches. With the Bears upgrades on both sides of the ball, this should give us an edge to score more than once or twice, while keeping the Gurley-less Goff lead rams, off the field.

Even when the Vikings are a playoff team, the games against them are always a grind. Either team can win, and with the Bears sweeping each of the last two years. This will be another game in which two defensive teams battle, and again, with the Bears improvements and the Vikings lack luster O-Line, the Bears get the edge in both these meetings.

The Bears have won four games against the Packers since 2010. Four, of 21 meetings. Two wins in each city, the last being in Chicago during the 2018 season. Their defense is good and while Rodgers gets called old every year, he still has our number. That said, if both teams are on the hunt come the last game of the season, a cold weather, outdoor game between these two will be a game too watch. They don't call it the Black-n-Blue division for nothing.

The Houston game is a bit off a toss up to me. Their run game is a bit unbalanced, though still churns out yards, they've lost their #1 WR, the defense is aging, but they still have Watson. He has shown himself to be a game changer and he still has dependable pieces around him such as Fuller, Watt, Mercilous, and Fells. Judging the team based on Trubisky and Foles as last seen, I think the Houston offense out scores us.

The Jaguars have not yet been able to do enough to recover from the player losses since the 2017 season. They have a young QB and a second year HC, I dont seem them having the time this summer to put it all together.

TL; DR: David gives Goliath a run for the money in peanut allergy treatments. May need to hold for a week or two, so no spaghetti hands please.
(Edit: I have also posted this in pennystocks & PennyDD. Please feel free to comment and share your opinions
DBVT is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical working on treatments for food allergies. The Company is focused on immunotherapy that works through skin absorption. Market cap. is about $600M.
What the galaxy says:
According to a study done by the Centers for Disease Control (adapted from company website):
The pilots of the ship
The flight guidance system
The stock traded between $8 and $10 pre-covid. It is currently trading around support at $4.5. In fact, the last time it traded around these lows was in December 2018 when the company voluntarily withdrew their BLA application for the Viaskin Peanut product due to “insufficient level of detail about the manufacturing and quality controls”. (Keep in mind, the new CEO joined in November 2018 and he is a thorough man). The price fell from $16 to $4 and they were subsequently sued. The hearing is pending in New Jersey. Previous to this, the price dropped from $42 to $28 in October 2017 when the company announced that the Viaskin Peanut clinical trial failed to achieve statistical significance in the lower end of the 95% confidence interval by a small margin (target was 15%, results indicated 12.4%)
Competitor $AIMT (market cap. $1B) benefited from both of these price moves, but lost the gains as swiftly as they came. In fact, they were unlucky that the approval of their oral tablets for allergy treatment was on January 31st, but they didn’t benefit from the price move due to covid. Furthermore, their drug is priced at $890 per month, only shows benefit after 2 years, and is still dogged by side effects like abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, tingling in the mouth, itching (including in the mouth and ears), cough, runny nose, throat irritation and tightness, hives, wheezing and shortness of breath and anaphylaxis. This drug must still undergo a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). i.e. it can only be administered in a controlled environment (parents have to take their kids to a certified hospital every 2 weeks) and the administering nurses, doctors and patients all have to register for the REMS.
Wallet situation
In their most recent press release, the company indicated that their cash runway (€262 million) can last through 2021.
The financials are lacklustre. In the past 3 years, revenue has stagnated at around $10M (although they beat estimates). However, since the new CEO was appointed, EPS grew 7% in the first year and 29% in the second year, and they have secured $200M in financing. Not too bad, not too good either, but given the CEO’s strong track record, the good things are yet to come
The rocket fuel
Viaskin technology is currently under review by the FDA. Taget action date for Viaskin Peanut is set for August 5. Viaskin Egg & Viaskin Milk will follow soon after. These products have a US FDA Fast Track designation. You may ask why a French company is developing treatment therapies in the US, and the answer would be that because on average, the process of drug review is 2-3 months faster in the USA than in the EU. If the FDA accepts the test data and gives a way forward on a date for inspection of the manufacturing facilities, then the race for allergy treatments would be blown wide open. It could probably soar back to the $16 range where it was in 2018 before that damned BLA withdrawal, or we can dream about a Saturn landing and aim for $42 where it was in 2017 before the clinical trials failed by the small margin. Nine (9) analysts have given it a short-term price target of $9 and mid-term target of $25, but I like the CEO’s track record and I prefer to dream bigger.
Some other windows to to stargaze
  1. The big boys are in on this one, many since February 2020 and some as recently as June 2020: Baker Brothers (11m shares), Arrowpoint Asset Management (4m), Perceptive Advisors (4M), Boxer Capital (3m), Morgan Stanley (2m), Amundi (1.4m), and Fidelity (574k). Sabby missed this rocket, which makes stargazing all the more beautiful. In total, institutions own 44% of the shares.
  2. There are also also recent acquisitions of stock in (in June 2020) by a number of index funds like FTIHX, IMRFX & JCCIX..
  3. The FDA had questions about the impact of the patch adhesion to its efficacy (remember, no safety issues were reported during the clinical trial). The company has already responded to this query but the FDA has given no further feedback apart from that the data was being reviewed. At this point, it is a coin flip game. High risk, high reward.
  4. The data mentioned in point (iii) above has been published in multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications (this one and this one and this one32155-4/abstract)). All reviews show positive data.
  5. The company recently trimmed down its workforce (something that is notoriously difficult to do in France) and scaled down other clinical programs in order to focus on the Viaskin Peanut product which is coming up for review on August 5th. (This simply indicates that they are very serious about this niche, or that they are prepared for a possible delay of the FDA’s decision)
  6. DBVT is collaborating with Nestlé in a deal worth €100M to develop more product candidates (e.g. Viaskin milk). Nestlé is the largest food company in the world with over 2000 brands and generates $93 billion plus in revenue each year since 2008. However, Nestlé is as notorious as all big companies are, and food allergies have been one of the legal thorns in their flesh for a while. They are personally invested in this peanut allergy product and this collaboration has not been affected by the covid crisis. (Fun fact: Nestle also owns 18% of $AIMT, the competitor company. They are hedging their bets)
  7. Skin patch therapy is potentially more marketable among the market segment that they are targeting (childen & infants) than pills. In addition, they would have potentially less side effects because the active compound gets directly into the bloodstream, and does not get absorbed via the liver.
  8. Consider that it is a French company and the big influence France has in the EU. If they get approved, they might get approval support from the French government too.

Constitutional Court judges won't leave voluntarily / Who's left in court? / Kocharyan trial

Yesterday the Parliament passed a bill to fire 3 CC judges who served longer than 12 years. That way, no judge will be above others because the judge's term limit is 12 years. The idea was supported by international institutes.
The bill was a compromise solution. The govt initially wanted to dismiss every judge appointed before the new Constitution's activation in early-2018. That would leave 1 HHK and 1 QP appointed judge.
Under yesterday's compromise bill, CC will have 5 HHK-era judges, and 4 QP-era judges nominated turn-by-turn by the Supreme Court, President, and Govt.

Today the fired judges made it clear they won't voluntarily leave the Court when the bill comes law.
Fired judge Alvina Gyulumyan: I'm sure the bill doesn't apply to me because I've been a judge since 2014. I'll take it to ECHR to challenge it if I'm fired. I think the other 2 judges won't be silent either.
Gyulumyan was appointed in 1996, then re-appointed in 2014. Yesterday's bill prohibits the same judge from serving twice and sets a 12-year limit. Gyulumyan argues the bill doesn't apply to her, and that her 1996 term "doesn't count".
Gyulumyan denied being former regime's tool, saying she has a record of being interdependent, and that the 10 protesters gathered outside of her office "aren't the public".

Fired judge Felix Tokhyan is in the same category as Gyulumyan. Appointed in 1997 then reappointed in 2005.
Tokhyan said: the rules were clear in 2005, we could serve until 70yo. The public approved the constitution in 2015. Ask Parliament why they want to change it now. They should have held a referendum despite COVID because there were still few infections in April.
Hungary went through this and the European court rules against the judges' firing.
I was always against the Parliamentary system when the Constitution was being amended. There are no mature established political parties.

HHK MP Hrayr Tovmasyan, whom the bill demotes from the CC president's position, referred to the bill as "an outcome of a shameful procedure by Parliament". He said the bill can be sent to CC so they can review it. (nice b8, m8)
He said he hasn't seen the bill in detail yet and will continue to attend to work as a president.

IND MP Babajanyan: CC president Hrayr Tovmasyan shouldn't be "ashamed" of the bill. He should feel regret for being unable to serve his masters anymore. He is presiding over the court that raped the elections for 20 years.

Kocharyan lawyer: this whole thing around CC is done to block the March 1st verdict around Law 300.1. They want to dismantle CC before the verdict. (3 guesses why)

March 1st victim's lawyer Egoyan: if 3 judges leave and the 4th judge recuses himself from Kocharyan case (due to his past anti-Kocharyan lawsuit), the court will be left with 5 judges. This will suspend the Kocharyan hearing in CC because the court needs at least 6 judges.

"Instead, the govt opted for short-term solutions."
"As a result, former corrupt officials freely roam around and pretend they're opposition politicians who're being persecuted."

SIS to investigate bombshell allegation about Tsarukyan kidnapping 14 MPs

Last week a former BHK & IND MP Hmayak Harutyunyan gave an interview during which he claimed BHK chief Gagik Tsarukyan, at the request of Serj Sargsyan, got rid of 14 unfavorable MPs, and that the MPs were held at Tsarukyan's facility and forced to sign notarized resignation papers under the threat of assassination.
SIS contacted Hmayak Harutyunyan for evidence. The latter says he has a lot more information than he presented during last week's interview. 🍿🍿🍿

Universal income tax

The govt wants everyone to file income taxes annually. They might pass a law soon.
It'll help identify high earners, bring into light currently-hidden revenues such as a landlord's income generated from a house lease, etc. Proponents say it'll allow to better identify who's rich and who's poor, to distribute social services more efficiently.
Ex-Finance Minister Aramyan also supports income taxes. He advocated for it in 2008. He warns that the public's lack of financial education should be taken into account. At the same time, the transition should happen, and it shouldn't be left up to the employer to declare the worker's taxes (which may not reflect the worker's entire income from elsewhere).
"Someone leases a land worth hundreds of thousands of $ but doesn't pay taxes from the income. That's not fair."
"Remittances can be excluded from taxation. And those who cheat by evading taxes under the guise of donations can be identified and punished."
The ex-official recommends a phased enrollment. "Start with the financially educated population."

Some economists believe now is not the right time for universal income taxation because of the post-COVID economic situation, and the population's lack of financial literacy.

Forget about universal income tax...

"High earners" don't want to pay more taxes towards pension.
Beginning July 1st, those earning over AMD 500k will begin pay a AMD 52k tax due to a payment threshhold adjustment. They complained.
QP MPs agreed with their complaints that 500k earners are already taxed too hard and that other parts of the law discriminate against them. QP drafted a bill to cancel the tax hike but the discussions didn't go anywhere.
The govt is against stopping this particular tax hike, saying it's for a pension fund that will sooner or later "return" to them.

2020.06.19 10:46 amusinghawk ScS Investment Thesis

Update 22/6: I decided not to invest in the end. I still believe the margin of safety is there, but I don't think the risk/reward payoff is as good as a couple of other companies I've been considering. The major shareholder selling off shares came very quickly after the very long-standing CEO announced his retirement. Those two things may not be connected, but when considering companies without moats, the quality of the management is of the utmost importance and not knowing who that team will be led by next year at a time where there could be a difficult trading period for the company left me with more uncertainty than I'd like.
Firstly, this is all just my opinion and research- the numbers may be wrong, what I infer from the numbers may be wrong and this is not a recommendation for you to buy, it's me looking for feedback on my thesis as I'm considering buying shares (but I haven't yet done so).
Business Overview
ScS is the UK's second biggest upholstery company with 9.3% of the market. The biggest is DFS with 32% (25% from DFS and 7% from Sofology).
ScS’s market share has grown sporadically since its 7.9% share at IPO in 2015.
As well as selling sofas, the company also sells flooring, although on a much smaller scale. Flooring revenue for H1 2020 counted for 12% of gross sales. It is in a much worse market position here as the 8th biggest supplier. Its market share has dropped in H1 2020, which it attributes to unsustainable pricing from Carpetright and another flooring retailer and its preference to sell less volume at a profitable level than participate in a pricing war.
The business had gross sales of £333.3 million in the year end 27 July 2019. This comes from selling sofas (£274.2M, +1.2% YoY) and flooring (£42.3M, -1.2% YoY) from their 100 UK stores, as well as selling online (£16.8M, +21.7%).
As well as operating from their 100 owned stores and website, the business previously ran 27 concessions in House of Fraser that equated to 8% of sales in 2017 which were shut in 2018 after House of Fraser went into administration. The closure of these concessions has muddied the waters of the business’s historic financials. ScS is slow-growing in terms of revenue, so the HoF closures turned what would have been 2% growth in 2019 to a 5% decline.
Nature of the investment
I don’t see this is a cutting-edge business with high growth potential and a strong moat. I do however see it as a business which is currently selling below intrinsic value based on 2019’s financials and even with no share price appreciation, the dividend yield alone is appealing. Given the nature of this investment, I believe it is most important to focus on the financial management of the company and the risks/threats to the business to ensure the business is capable of handling market downturns and maintaining market share.
Financial Management
The business appears to me to be run very conservatively, especially when compared to its closest peer- DFS. They ran a debt-free operation until drawing down £12m from their revolving credit facility in March to ensure sufficient liquidity throughout the lockdown. Upon reopening 80 of their England stores on 23rd May they announced that they had cash of £48.3m (including the £12m RCF) and although the directors gave no guidance on the months ahead, they expressed their confidence in their liquidity, ability to weather the market downturn caused by COVID-19 and return to growth ‘when the economy recovers’. It is worth noting that as the business receives cash upfront and pays suppliers afterwards, a significant proportion of that £48.3m (if not all of it) will be required to pay suppliers, so this measurement definitely overstates the company’s liquidity.
Risks/Threats
The two main risks here are that the total upholstery market shrinks, or the company’s market share shrinks (or both).
Total upholstery market shrinks
The current upholstery market size is £3.2 billion. Pre-2008 it was higher, peaking at £3.92 billion in 2007. Its lowest five year average was from the years 2010-2014 where it averaged £2.96 billion. Estimating owner earnings for these years (assuming today’s 9.3% market share and making some assumptions around which expenses are static at today’s levels and which scale with spend) I arrive at an intrinsic value for the business of £65 million. This is using my 15% minimum acceptable rate of return. This suggests to me that even a permanent reduction in the size of the upholstery market won’t result in losses, providing the business holds market share.
However, in the last few years where the market has decreased by 3%, non-House of Fraser revenue has increased by 8%, more than offsetting this decline. If this trend continues, even in the face of a permanently reduced market, I believe the business is undervalued.
Losing upholstery market share - through market disruption (i.e. the Amazon effect)
Given the high price points and the long-term nature of the purchase, as well as one of the most important features being comfort, sofa sales don’t lend themselves well to online-only retailers. Amazon had 1.9% of the upholstery market in 2019, which was 0% growth on the previous year. Whilst it's never wise to count Amazon out, the current low price of the shares means that according to my calculation of owner earnings (discounted at 15% rate), we would have broken even on our investment in 5 years. Yes, Amazon may take market share, but ScS are rapidly growing online sales themselves and within a 5 year time period I don't see Amazon as a major threat to their business.
Whilst I'm confident Amazon aren't an existential threat, the uptake in online purchasing can't be denied. Most customers report researching online prior to visiting a store, and the proportion of customers who do buy without visiting a store (10% according to DFS in 2019) is indeed rising. The main risk I see here is that ScS are behind the curve on online retailing. They attempted to purchase sofa.com, but this fell through. I believe that improving their own SEO (in a cost-efficient manner) would be far more useful than purchasing another online retailer. I've read an SEO analysis of the UK sofa industry, specifically comparing DFS and ScS that stated ScS was far behind the curve in terms of generating traffic for its site, and concluded this with some of my own naïve research of searching for various keywords and seeing whose ads and organic links show up. Regardless of the business's SEO setbacks, they are still the second biggest player in the market, so given the amount of research customers reportedly do when purchasing a sofa, I find it unrealistic that the average consumer wouldn't come across ScS's site during their online research- especially if as the majority of customers do, they intend to complete their purchase in store. Additionally, although branded searches can be described as rising or falling depending on the pre & post periods used for ScS, over any time period they appear to be far outpacing growth in DFS although doing so from a much smaller base; the same can be said for online revenue growth.
Losing upholstery market share - DFS
DFS as a group is the much bigger market share threat in my eyes. DFS (including Sofology) have a market share 3.4 times that of ScS, and due to the growth of Sofology outpacing ScS, this is likely to increase further (although this is partially offset by DFS’s core brand declining in market share). If we believe there are moats at play in the upholstery retail business, we should be very wary of DFS as a competitor. Marketing expenses aren't trivial in this business, and with a larger customer base, DFS will certainly have efficiencies of scale there. That being said, it is ScS, not DFS with the highest conversion of revenue into operating profit at 4.6%, compared to DFS's 4.1%. That's despite ScS having gross profit margins 10 p.p. lower than DFS- however, it is hard to tell how much of this is due to DFS attempting to grow quicker than ScS through new store openings.
I therefore think it is prudent to further split this risk into two areas:
Sofology market share growth
Sofology’s current trajectory of market share looks set to overtake ScS somewhere in the region of 2022 to 2023. It’s unlikely that much of this will come at the expense of ScS due to Sofology’s more high-end offering (DFS have also mentioned that Sofology has had little cannibalisation of DFS’s core business), but it will certainly bolster the DFS group’s position in the industry.
I am therefore content that ScS need not worry about Sofology’s expansion too much. The real threat Sofology brings is if it provides extra capital for DFS’s core business to fight ScS in a price war.
DFS core business market share advantage
For whatever reason, DFS don't appear to have been able to use their increased market share to dominate ScS in terms of either profitability or more growth. Their most recent half year results note that although their core brand revenues are declining, they historically have grown market share during market downturns. It seems unlikely to me that this growth will come at the expense of ScS given the value-oriented nature of both suppliers and the trends of both businesses over the past five years.
It's hard for me to put a causal driver behind DFS's core brand market share decline (perhaps their management is stretched too thin across multiple smaller brands or they are spending too much time looking for more acquisitions, perhaps they've just had bad luck with their store placements being in areas of worse consumer confidence), but I'm content with seeing ScS's revenues grow amidst a shrinking market whilst DFS's are shrinking.
Losing flooring market share
The flooring market seems to be more volatile than the furniture market, and ScS’s position within this market has been very volatile as of late. ScS introduced flooring into their product mix in 2012, and since then it has grown rapidly to account for £42m in gross sales. From 2015 to 2019 (inclusive) sales had grown at a rate of 20%, 5%, 7%, before decreasing by 1% in 2019 and 13% in H1 2020 (this ended at the end of January 2020 so this decline was pre-coronavirus).
I'm reminded of the quote 'the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent' here. The current market environment will undoubtedly have resulted in many companies trying to sell off inventory at record-low prices when stores reopen. I believe that management has the right attitude towards trading, reminiscent of how Warren Buffett approaches insurance. Whilst they'll likely further lose market share in the short term, if Carpetright are forced to close stores, ScS would likely benefit substantially from that. Also, even modest growth in sofa sales would offset major declines in flooring as evidenced in H1 2020 where gross sales grew 0.5% despite the flooring decline.

2020.06.09 22:56 Akram323 Oscar Best Picture Nominees That Bombed at the Box Office

For awhile I was quite curious to see just how significant box office performance could be to the movies that the Academy nominates for accolades. And though I’ve got plenty of accolades to pick from, I’ll keep it simple and discuss the Best Picture nominees that I believe bombed at the box office despite their accolades. The list gets much bigger once we step out into Best Director and especially Best Screenplay, but I’ll do this one category for the time being. In the future I might do an entire roundup of the above-the-line categories 0in terms of box office bombs.
For the time being, here are the Best Picture nominees I believe bombed at the box office. A fair amount of the earliest nominees give me little box office information, and if you think I missed any nominees or if any of my nominees seem unfit to be here, let me know. Anyway, let’s run down the list chronologically, shall we?
So...yeah. That’s a pretty big list of movies (33 total) I’m sure lost money in their initial theatrical runs. Make of it what you will.
Some movies were unable to give me a straight answer, so I left them in a separate “iffy” category. Anyone willing to clear up whether these movies turned a profit or not please do.
They might have been money losers, they might not. I don’t know for sure, and I’m not in the mood to know for sure. For now, I’ll just feel glad I made this list of movies that legitimately flopped compared to their budgets (which I didn’t list out of concern of misleading information). Hope you enjoyed it.
